In German, cat is Katze and cat is Kater. Usually in the conversation, as I noticed, everyone uses Katze, with anything about cats of both sexes. But when I talk to the Germans, of course, I did not want to call our begemot some kind of catcher there. That’s why I always spoke of Kater, thus indicating his courage and solidity. And almost never the interlocutors understood me from the first time. They showered a little, questioned and then began to smile and discuss their own animals. I wrote everything down to the rarity of using this word. Until recently you can say accidentally did not find the second meaning of the word "Kater" in the dictionary. Especially the Mushroom. And the stable phrase "Ich habe einen Kater", which means not at all "I have a cat", as I always thought, and not at all the refined "I’m from the beard"... And after all, no dog has said! :D
