Once a graduate student at the University of Maryland, the future famous American mathematician George Bernard Danzig was late to class and re-written from the classboard two equations, taking them for homework. They turned out to be unexpectedly difficult, and it took Danzig a few days to resolve them. As it turned out later, these were statistical tasks that the leading scientists of the time were unsuccessfully working on.
