As the chairman of the Union of Veterans of Syria, Valery Anisimov, recalls, in 1983-1984 the two Soviet anti-aircraft missile regiments transferred under the guise of tourists to the port of Tartus, equipped with the S-200 anti-aircraft missile system, "in interaction with the air defense forces and means of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) took an active part in repelling Israeli air strikes on the SAR troops."
