In Russian, smells really "hear". This is a literary norm, and it is everywhere. Examples of Gumilev (going through the huts of the Galasses, you hear the smell of a ladana) and L.N. Tolstoy. Closer to the 21st century is, for example, in Viktor Afanasiev. If you hear such a smell cuts your hearing, you’ve just read little.

I read not so much, the expression "listen (hear) smell" was met many times, and I learned that this is a literary norm 30 years ago. It still cuts both the ear and the eye. I can’t do anything with the fact that in my head the word “listen” and its derivatives in my head are firmly associated with acoustic sensations, and with odor – no, even crying. It dissonates. Therefore, in everyday speech I am satisfied with the grounded terms "smell"/"feel", and meeting the term "hear" (smell) I innerly tremble from my own imperfection.
