Tolkien wrote the word “gnomes” as dwarves. After the publication of The Hobbit in 1937, then-English grammar Nazis condemned Tolkien for deviating from the literary norm of dwarfs, recommended by the Oxford Dictionary. But Tolkien did not change anything.
