Once a long time ago, at school, we were told of one stunning experiment, either in America or in London (the details, as always, I do not remember). Here is the experiment itself.
In a spacious room for a small population of rats created all the conditions for a quiet and interesting life. They had everything - enough water and food, the right number of individuals of both sexes, warmth, entertainment - all that a normal rat could want. And in the corner of this room there was a open door where rats could pass. There was very scary, dangerous, they were running, they had to overcome all kinds of obstacles, and they did not need to go there. But a certain percentage of the rats still went there, they wandered there, and then returned, very exhausted, rested - and left again.
There was a conclusion about a kind of "gen of adventure" - said, such individuals move the population forward in the intellectual plane. That is, rats-romantics, rats-researchers who do this not for some benefit, but simply so. O_O
