The Japanese have such a concept as "Giri" – it’s something like our "Debt", but not exactly:
If a person has done something good to a Japanese, the Japanese has a "Giri" - the duty to repay the good in the amount, not less than what has been done to him. Thus saved from death, the Japanese must repay the savior with no less than saving a life. In combination with the fact that, according to the Japanese concepts, to cause inconvenience to another is a terrible offence, the Japanese in a critical situation thinks approximately as follows: "I will help a person and thus impose on him a "Giri" than I will cause him a terrible inconvenience. So... I’d better not help him".
And with the stone fucking passes by.
