Remember the almost magical, fabulous victory of the national team of Denmark at Euro 92. This fairy tale has another side, but it is not fun, more so scary, but divine.
In 1992, for political reasons, the national team of Yugoslavia was suspended from participating in the tournament held in Sweden.
This event, typical of the "Black Swan", led to the fact that the team of Denmark, which did not enter the tournament and spent a holiday at the resorts, was invited to replace the Yugoslavs.
At first, no one in Denmark believed this news, everyone thought it was a joke. Then did not believe this coach Danish Richard Meller-Nilson, later when it became clear that it was not a game, began to collect Danish footballers from all resorts of the world, the matter was very difficult, at least because the players thought it was a game and hanged tubes.
With great difficulty the coach managed to persuade the footballers to arrive in the location of the national team. For example, Michael Laudrup did not come, he was in conflict with the coach, and did not want to interrupt his rest, especially everyone in the world understood that Denmark is going to the tournament as a statistician.
Meller-Nilson understood this, so he asked the players not to interrupt the rest, because after three games everyone would be able to continue it. The team had no training plan, no analysis of opponents, nothing at all.
Also from the championship initially refused Kim Wilfort, the reason is terrible, his young daughter died in the hospital for patients with cancer. The coach and the team understood what a terrible situation Father Wilfort was in. He was offered any conditions he would choose. He refused.
But the sick girl got better, and she and Kim's wife asked him to go to the championship. Trainer Nelson allowed Wilford to return to Denmark immediately after the tournament.
The first match Denmark plays a draw against the English, in the second loses to Sweden, the child becomes ill, and in the break his wife asks Wilfort to return to Copenhagen urgently. Wilfort collects a suitcase, leaves and asks his comrades not to wait for him, he has decided to leave the tournament. Everyone knows Kim is leaving.
He is watching the match with France in the hospital with his daughter. Denmark opens the account, France compares, everything went out, but at the very end Elstrup scores France a victory goal.
Wilfort sees the whole hospital, whispered with happy cries, sick, unfortunate people who have almost nothing left to live, people weeping and crying of terrible pain, bald, thin, weak, and lost glow in the eyes, suddenly revive, and he sees around happy people. He sees how all the rooms rejoice, he sees his happy daughter. They have forgotten their fatal illness, they are happy, at least for the time of the match, they have forgotten their torments. Wilford locks up in the toilet and cries. Wilford’s heart was broken from joy and pain.
In the semi-final Denmark awaits the invincible Holland, it is the main contender for victory. In the composition of Van Basten, Reykard, Cuman, Gullitt, Bergkamp, Blind, Frank de Bur, Van Brekelen, they are hungry for victory, they have no equals. Wilfort, after being seen in the hospital, the requests of the sick and the requests of his daughter, returns to the team.
He knows, he remembers for whom Denmark is playing, for whom he has to score, he remembers what will make deadly sick people at least a little happier.
After the main time 2-2 beat the penalties, Basten breaks terribly. To the point approaches tired, weight loss, all stressed, in a severe mental condition Kim Wilfort...
He looks up at the sky, looks toward Copenhagen, beats and scores. In his eyes the tears, because he knows that the daughter and all the sick are now there in the death-filled chambers, happy, and forgot all their misfortunes in front of the television.
Denmark in the final is similar to a fairy tale written by another Danish G.H. by Andersen.
After the match he immediately leaves for Denmark, his daughter got very bad. Seven year old Lin died. Wilfort refuses to play in the final, but his family and all the sick clinics literally drive him out of the chamber, demanding to return and win the European Cup for them. This is what the daughter asks when she finds the strength to speak.
You all remember the final with Germany, the Danes open the score early, then they are pressed by the Germans, they were already close to match, but 11 minutes before the end of the match, Kim Wilfort scores his most important ball in life, and makes the dream of the whole nation a reality.
But he thought only of those who are now there, dying of pain and despair in cancer chambers, celebrating success. He understood that football and victory pulled people out of their painful hell. He, no, all of them, the whole team, did it for them, for all of them, and for dying Lin.
The goal of Kim in the final is considered to be one of the most emotional and tragic goals in the history of football.
The summer fairy tale of the national team of Denmark will enter the "golden fund" of the history of football.
Lin Wilfort died a few days after the final. In the last few hours of her life, she said she was proud of her father. Her dream came true, Denmark won, and Dad was strong. She dreamed of seeing the summer fairy tale of the Danish national team before she died, and she saw it. It was a story written for her, and for people like her. They were happy that summer.
